December, 2008

I just finished a CMC Fundraiser Recital in Saskatoon. The night was pretty much freezing, but the hall was warmed with energy. Saskatoon is one of the best places to perform...it took a few emails before my arrival and next thing I knew I came home to a front page article in the entertainment section of the Star Phoenix, 2 television (CBC and CTV) promotions and 1 radio (CBC) interview. My friend Carman Rabuka had put up posters around the city, and tickets were selling very well. It really made me feel at home and that my city has continued to support me despite being away for 6 years. I think in the end it’s important not for me to forget this, as other cities (such as Toronto) end up being too hectic to care about much else but working and commuting.

Thank you to Stephen Nicholson for the great photos. Well I was quite happy with the recital. It was not my best, but there were moments that went better than ever. The Boosendorfer concert grand at the hall was tricky to control (I remember it being a bit of a temperamental beast the last time I played it 10+ years ago). Certainly the greatest part of last night’s recital was the sold-out crowd. There were times when you could hear a pin drop. The CMC should be happy that we raised a lot of money, though I know it still won’t be enough. After fretting about it until the day of the recital, I did end up playing an encore that I learned 10 days ago. It was Kapustin’s 6th etude, and I think it went alright! It certainly won’t be my last Kapustin tune...he certainly rocks. I’ll try to post a video in due time.

Now I will enjoy my holiday, filled (already) with the best home cooking, great friends and the utmost relaxation. Happy Holidays everyone!

His Liszt had all the bravura and beauty you could hope for, and his Dutilleux was pure rock and roll.
