March 2009

A couple of weeks ago I played for a event for the Canadian Chopin Festival. It was Chopin’s 199th birthday and it featured a lecture about Polish influences in Chopin’s music, by Janet Lopinksi. I also performed some pieces during the lecture (http://www.chopinfestival2010.com/pastevents.html). All in all, it was a fun night (they let me blow out the candles), and it was extra special to play for the Chopin Festival. It was this competition 4 years ago that started to change my life from a musical perspective. I remember the BravoTV! camera crew following me to school to film a documentary, and then getting the opportunity to travel to Warsaw for the Chopin Competition. I wish for success in their preparation for the next one in 2010!

Anyone who dares to play Beethoven's last Piano Sonata Opus 111 must be fearless and confident in his skills. In the case of Thomas Yu, both are true...[He] plays the piece with elegance and depth...and his interpretation was the highlight of the festival day.
