As part of the their 100th anniversary year, the University of Saskatchewan released a magazine detailing the school’s top 100 most influential alumni. After selecting a field of 120,000 students in the past century, the biggest surprise came to me by email. I was selected as one of the group! I was absolutely amazed and humbled by the idea. I don’t feel quite up to the same standards as...say...a prime minister of Canada! I am an amateur pianist who just never quit playing. To have all this good news come my way was not my primary intention. But I do think it is important for people to leave a legacy in this world...whether you reach out to 1 person or 1 million.
I would like to thank my parents for their unconditional support, and of course to my teachers in both sciences and music. Also, to all my friends who have put up with me all this time (with my crazy lifestyle!). I hope to be the best ambassador to all of you, and let’s cross our fingers...it can only get better from here…
I’ve included the page where I am included. It’s kind of cool to be next to Saf from Wide Mouth Mason, as those guys were role models to me in university. I am proud to say that I am the youngest one of the group! Thank goodness...with these grey hairs popping up it’s nice to feel young. Anyone who dares to play Beethoven's last Piano Sonata Opus 111 must be fearless and confident in his skills. In the case of Thomas Yu, both are true...[He] plays the piece with elegance and depth...and his interpretation was the highlight of the festival day.
